From 2011 To 2012, EQUATIONS campaigned extensively to push the MoEF (Ministry of Environment and Forests) and other policy makers to be more conscientious in their regulation of tourism in forest areas. We did this by highlighting that state authorities such as the MoEF were acting in contravention of the 2006 Forest Rights Act [mouseover text: The Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, (a.k.a FRA) that legislated protections for adivasi and other forest dwelling communities. In 2012, the Supreme Court of India passed an interim order disallowing tourism in the core areas, or Critical Tiger Habitats of Tiger Reserves.

EQUATIONS was nominated to the National Tiger Conservation Authority’s committee to help formulate guidelines for the zoning of core areas, buffer zones and tourism in tiger reserves. In these meetings, we collaborated with several movements and organisations to demand that the committee's recommendations were pro-people. However, while we removed some anti-people clauses concerning forest management, the guidelines finally submitted to the Supreme Court contained clauses that were not in keeping with our comments and worked against the interests of local communities. We then collaborated with other organisations to raise our objections to the state authorities and campaigned extensively to raise public awareness around the issues through extensive engagement with the media.
