Tourists may generate up to twice as much solid waste per capita as residents (IFC, 2007). There is also a fair amount of liquid waste generated, mostly from the restaurants and accommodation sector. The large quantities of waste generated by the tourism sector and the assorted nature of these wastes in terms of decomposability has always posed challenges in developing solutions to waste management. Understanding the enormity of the problem as tourism is opening up, Equitable Tourism Options (EQUATIONS) with Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) are organising two panel discussions ‘Waste Management and Tourism'.
